Seybold Locomotive Works Locomotive Fleet
Not only do we repair locomotives for other railroads or private collectors we also have our own! We have 10 locomotives, 3 diesel, 7 steam. All owned by our Founder, Owner, and Operator Hyde Seybold. We formed around the preservation and operation of Hyde's prized 2-8-0 #3. Our shop was built initially just to house her and his 0-6-0 #2 during their restorations and keep them in the shop when they weren't running. When we decided to repair outside locomotives this didn't really change. Hyde has since added 3 more locomotives to his private roster. Four of the five were made by Roundhouse a company now owned by Athearn. With #2 and #3 we now have a new shop goat John Deere EMD-40 #4 which is what we use to shunt our projects and rolling stock around our shop and siding. We also bought another little shop goat before that it's a 1960 Gilbert Jackshaft switcher #1 but it was found to need an entire mechanical overhaul. Today it lies in pieces inside our shop far from completion but we will finish her sometime in 2013, it doesn't hurt to have 2 shop goats. Our last locomotive is another steamer, a Roundhouse 4-4-2 SSW Atlantic #605. Purchased with a matching 5 coaches plus caboose set online as a christmas present Hyde absolutely loves her! She is presently our only operational steamer and will run excursions occasionally to raise funds to keep our other projects and locos moving along steadily! All of Hyde's locomotives are housed in his shop. How you might ask? By laying track on the shop floor next to the main track that goes in and out of the shop. That's where you'll find #605, #2 and #1. When you enter the shop #605 is on your right, #3 and #4 are on the main track in the middle, and #1 and #2 on the left. #2 and #3 are pretty close to being completed, #3 will be finished first no doubt and will doublehead with #605 on her first public run! Those two steamers will run excursions and fundraiser trips once every month or whenever Hyde wants to, after all they are his locomotives ;)
As of Early 2013 the Seybold Locomotive Works has built their own new orange 4-4-2 #6! She is fully operational and will switch off with 605 per excursion weekends. We also have 2 more 0-4-0s! One is an old Varney docksider that was donated to us. We rebuilt the frame and cleaned everything up in 3 days! We repaired the motor wires, built new steps, and painted it orange for our new steam shop goat! She still needs some frame adjustments before she enters full service. The other in an AHM A-3 daylight with a slopeback tender! She is currently down for an entire overhaul! See the shop projects page for the latest news.
In summer 2013 we built a brand new Seybold Locomotive Works shop! It is twice the size of the old one and that equals more storage space for Hyde's ever growing private fleet on engines!

This is how things are stored. This photo was before the aquisition of our #4 but she's housed where the black tender behind #3 is for easy access to the outside track.
Here's Hydes #1, a 1960 Gilbert Jackshaft switcher. Her motor is on the right side in front of #605. She is presently undergoing a slow rebuild.
Here's Hydes #2, a 1950s Roundhouse 0-6-0 slopebaker. She arrived in deplorable shape with no tender and has slowly been undergoing restoration back to operation. The frame was repaired as with the drive wheels and valve guides. The frame was repainted as with the drive wheels and rods. Boiler is in primer and soon to be painted! We will be aquiring a tender for her soon. When operational she will only run caboose trains do to her old age, brass drivers, and small configuration. To be completed in 2013

Here's Hyde's main pride and joy! A 1990s Roundhouse David Lee's Circus 2-8-0! Built as a kit she was purchased from a guy in Hollywood and never assembled. It went up for sale on ebay and Hyde fell in love with it when he saw it! Hyde made it his mission to get the locomotive no matter what and he did! In 2 months the tender was built, frame was built and the frame and cylinders painted black. The project slammed to a hault when the main rods broke during assembly. The locomotive was purchased for the SCVR being his Seybold Locomotive Works didn't exsist yet. When it was clear the locomotive wasn't going to be finished anytime soon he took private ownership! It wasn't till after he tore up his old SCVR line to build a new one that he built a seperate shop for his #3. Thus the Seybold Locomotive Works was born! Today the locomotive is 90% finished and only lacks main rods. Hyde repainted the boiler off an idea from his good friend John Minor to make it looks more "circusy." Hyde loves every part of this engine and she is operational but only has side rods, she won't officially run excursions and run publicly till we recieve her new main rods which is set to be really soon! She and 4-4-2 #605 will run excursions together to raise funds for other projects. #3 is set to be finished early 2013.
Here's Hyde's #4, a rare Roundhouse EMD-40 Critter. Painted and lettered for John Deere Hyde purchased this locomotive to be his shop's Shop Goat being his other shop goat #1 wasn't going to be operational anytime soon. #4 runs actively switching Seybold Locomotive Works rolling stock around pulling Hyde's locomotives in and out of his shop. This is without a doubt Hyde's favorite diesel!
Here's Hyde's #605, a 1980s Roundhouse SSW 4-4-2 Atlantic! Purchased as a christmas gift to himself #605 came with 5 matching coaches and a matching caboose! It received a newly soldered wires back down to the motor and an all around cleaning and lubing then she was cleared for operation! This makes her Hyde's only private Seybold Locomotive Works steamer thats operational for now that is! #605 has already pulled 2 test excursions with her matching consist and performed flawlessly! She will start running occasional excursions in 2015 to raise funds for Hyde's other projects!
She was completely rebuilt from August 2013-September 2014. Equipped with a new motor, new drive wheels, 50% of the valve gear replaced, tender rebuilt, new front handrails, freshly painted smokebox, she's ready and roaring to pull our special excursions alongside 2102!

#5 is a late 60's Mantua 0-6-0 "Big Six" Shifter with full valve gear and multiple separately added brass parts. We full lettered the locomotive and gave it a complete servicing. She's fully operational and has been used on excursions as a fill in for 605 or 2102.
Here's our other 4-4-2! SLW #6, also known as "The Great Pumpkin" this old 1960's Roundhouse kit was purchased and built rather quickly by our shop and given a custom spin by owner Hyde with the stand out orange paint! She's fully operational and will switch with 605 on operating weekends.
Here's #6's little sibling, #7! A 1950's Varney Little Joe Docksider donated to us by a friend of Hyde's has surely come a long way! Her front steps were rebuilt and her rear ones built from scratch, Running gear torn apart and cleaned, motor repaired, wiring repaired, and frame repaired. She sports the same coat of orange as #6 and is fully operational!
#11 is the "Hyde" as it is Hyde's personal engine of the SLW. Yes he owns all of the SLW engines but he made this one his signature locomotive. It is a Roundhouse freight version 2-6-0. Arrived as a completely stripped down engine and slowly, Hyde, with no external funding or parts acquisitions, has painstakingly put the locomotive back together and made it have a special look. Using only parts we had lying around the shops she is QUITE the sight and is Hyde's proudest turn around to date. The last thing he will do is add custom valve gear that he has to build.
Here is our #33! A Southern Pacific Mantua 0-4-0T Booster! Purchases originally for the SCVR by Hyde in February 2012. In March of 2013 we were In need of an 0-4-0T being #7 was only just underway with her restoration. So we looked at 33 which hadn't operate a single SCVR train in many weeks and we knew it could come to good use here. So ownership was transferred and the way we see it the rest of its history. She's fully operational and will be our main caboose train engine along with #7!
The 2102 is a Broadway Limited Imports Reading T-1 Northern. Needless to say, she's the largest steam locomotive in the Seybold Locomotive Works and equipped with sound and smoke is definitely the fan favorite! For our larger audience excursions she is the main source of power. Her and 605 share the excursion schedule.
