Here at the Seybold Locomotive Works we are associated with an active HO tourist railroad called the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad! Our shop will be placed next to the SCVR's shop on their new line! Hyde Seybold is the owner and founder of both the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad and the Seybold Locomotive Works. The difference is we at the Seybold Locomotive Works specialize in outside (private) locomotive repair owned by people not associated with the SCVR. However while Hyde does own every single piece of the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad, ie locomotives, rolling stock, buildings etc, he privately owns two steam locomotives. The prized locomotive is his 2-8-0 #3. Originally built for the David Lee's Circus roadshow, it went to their railroad in pieces only to sit for years and to have nothing become of it. Then in June of 2012 it went up for sale on an auction cite. Immediately when Hyde noticed it he knew he had to have it! In the end he did purchase the locomotive and it immediately started being assembled in the SCVR's shop! However, too many problems kept setting the locomotive further away from being completed and once Hyde realized it was taking up to much time assembling it, basically tieing up the shop crew for 2 months straight, he took private ownership of locomotive so he could work on it on his own time. What a lot of people don't get is that all the SCVR locomotives are initially privately owned by Hyde but are maintained and repaired for the sole purpose that they run on the SCVR line. With 2-8-0 #3 it will be completed and fully operable soon but it's main job is what ever Hyde chooses it to be. It is on the SCVR roster and will run excursions for that line ocasionally but it will more run special ocasion events. It will sit in the Seybold Locomotive Works as long as Hyde lives. It will be worked on and housed in the shop 24/7. However when more outside locomotives arrived to be repaired here #3 will be moved outside the shop and be covered up. If shop space is not availible in the Seybold Locomotive Works, we have the option to keep your locomotive in one of the SCVR shops, if you'd like it to be properly protected from dust. Just let us know if you'd like to do this! Anyways Hyde's 2-8-0 is nearly operable, all the locomotive needs is a new set of main rods which are being aquired soon! The other locomotive Hyde owns privately is an old 0-6-0 from the 1950s! This all metal steam locomotive has a real soft spot in Hyde. Hyde found it at an online auction cite and he fell in love with it! Hyde has wanted one of these old SP 0-6-0s for some time! However this one had a catch. It had no tender and was in rough shape! It's lucky Hyde repairs locomotives not only as a business but as his hobby! Once the Seybold Locomotive Works was established Hyde, even before arrival of this 0-6-0, admited it into private ownership. The main reason that was applied because he knew ahead of time that this project would take months to complete and in the end it wasn't worth rebuilding for active excursion use on the SCVR. Since it's arrival in early September 2012 the locomotive has come a long way and is looking great already! The boiler, frame, cab, rods, gear cover plate, cylinders, and drive wheel faces have been painted black! Additional frame and wheel work is needed before Hyde can move on to motor tests! Not to mention he still needs to aquire a tender for it! Preferably Hyde is aiming to aquire the original style tender it had, that would be a slopeback. Around winter time is when he plans to look for one. Affectionately the locomotive is now SCVR (SLW) #2. Both #2 and #3 are owned seperately from the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad but they still will run excursions for the SCVR! Right now #2 is in the shop with an SP GP9 that Hyde is working on which is also privately owned! #2 is likely to spend most of her time in the Seybold Locomotive Works whether its on the rails or on the shop floor. She barely fits when fully assembled so when an outside locomotive is being repaired #2 will be kept outside of the shop. There is no expected completion date for either locomotive. Hyde also has 3 Southern Pacific Diesel units in private ownership! An old GP9 #5600 and 2 F7as! All units are black widow paint! The GP9 needs new drive bands before it can be operable but he did get the motor working good again! The F7as are fully operable and will be used on SCVR excursions in the future!
In winter 2012, Hyde purchased a Roundhouse 4-4-2 atlantic! It was custom built by the previous owner as an SSW or Cotton Belt 4-4-2 with matching 5 coach set! Hyde purchased it off ebay as a christmas gift to him. Enitially it was to be an SCVR loco and cars but he fell in love with it and made it his 4th privately owned locomotive! It needed 2 wires to be soldered back down in order for it to run but this was completed and it was fully oiled and lubed and now the Seybold Locomotive Works has its first operational locomotive to run excursions and raise funds for our other personal projects! On December 26th, 2012 the locomotive was put into our shop next to #3!
