Shop Projects Update: 10/6/12
Here at the Seybold Locomotive Works there are as many as 6 different locomotives being worked on at one time! All the locomotives in and around our shop are owned by Hyde and are associated with the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad, Seybold Locomotive Works, and his other collection of locomotives which is called The Main Fleet. These locomotives are rotated into the Seybold Locomotive Works from time to time, depending on which project is closer to beign done, or has a higher priority. Below we will list each active project and what works being done to it!
Southern Pacific 0-6-0 #1277
Purchased in early 2011, this Bachmann SP 0-6-0 is part of The Main Fleet. It's been out of service since spring of this year. The reason she was removed from service was because of extensive rust on her smokebox. This was caused from the smoke unit it had and what ever oil was left in the smokebox rusted the sides and bottom portions of it. While that was going on, we knew she needed additional rod work after extensive daily use! It was torn apart in late spring and placed behind the SCVR's shop. At the time the Seybold Locomotive Works didn't exsist. Anyways her drive wheels were cleaned and retuned, rods straightened, tender weights repaired, and rust removed from the smokebox. However somewhere along the line we lost her crankpin which seperates the side rod from the main and valve gear rods. This is why she was never put back together. We did put her boiler back on the frame which did make her operational but she didn't have her valve gear. We found additional crankpins in our spare parts selection but sadly they did not fit. We machined a new crankpin and it is installed but #1277 still needs axle and rod work. Right now it's not a big priority.
Southern Pacific GP9 #5600
A privately owned locomotive of Hyde Seybold is this old Athearn 1950s Band-Drive GP9 #5600. Purchased for scrap price this rare Black Widow unit is a prized diesel to Hyde's collection. It is missing it'd drive bands which means it can't operate. However Hyde did get the motor working again and after some tuning it's a successful motor! New bands will be purchased and installed soon! This locomotive will work as a switcher, switchign around locomotives in and out of the Seybold Locomotive Works, but she will also run excursions on the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad! Right now she is in the shop for some cleaning. Hyde plans to keep her in present condition, as her original look. Rusty handrails, dirty body, but she will have clean wheels and an oiled motor when operational!
Union Pacific 2-8-2 #2528
This Bachmann 2-8-2 is the newest steam locomotive Hyde has purchased. Within minutes of it's arrival here Hyde tested it and after a few minutes it cracked 2 of its drive axles! This was the most common problem old bachmanns had. Luckily we have spare drive axles and after a week we added 2 new axles to the 2nd and 3rd drive wheel! We found out that additional axle adjustments are needed on the 4th wheel. She presently sits behind the shop awaiting this additional work. Being it's one of the closest projects it will be rotated in the shop soon! It belongs to the SCVR and will run excursions in the future!
SCVR 0-4-0 #99
Purchased as a parts supplier for SCVR 0-4-0 #5, this 1960s all metal shifter became a rebuild project after Hyde realized he'd have almost a full 0-4-0 lying around the shop in parts so he painted all main parts and 80% assembled another 0-4-0! She was missing, her crankpins, drawbar, valve guides, and motor. All those went on SCVR #5. So when we finall found the parts and aquired them we put together #99! Upon tests when finally put together, we found out that her front driver wheel wasn't quartered properly, prohibiting operation! So now it's disassembled again and inside the shop awaiting future work. We plan to purchased a quartering jig to repair ALL wheels that need work in the future!
SLW 0-6-0 #2
Built in the 1950s, this all metal MDC-Roundhouse 0-6-0 is privately owned by Hyde Seybold. It has been undergoing a massive restoration since it arrived! All the parts were painted and cleaned! The motor has been repaired and tested and it works great! Additional wheel and frame work is needed before he can do operational tests! It is close to being completed. Presently it sits in the shop for its additional work!
