This page will be about past projects that we have done for customers and various locomotives from the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad
Tyco C430 Truck Building project.
On October 6th, 2012, a prized locomotive of our founder and owner Hyde Seybold was in need of serious repair. The old front truck assembly to this 1970s Tyco Spirit of 76 C430 was losing power and was nearing the end of it's energy. Luckily Hyde has about 3 spare truck assemblies identical to that of this C430 so he knew building a new one would be rather easy. In the photo to the left you can see her original truck frame, on the right is the new one to be built and placed on the old Alco! It took 2 weeks of piecing together new parts but we did get the job done and we all watched our work pay off when #4301 ran down the tracks better then she ever has! She recieved new springs and brushes, new PT plate screw, "new" truck frame and PowerTorque assembly and her wheels were cleaned. The following photos below will show the process!
Here you can see all the parts to her new frame on the shop floor
This is how #4301 sat for a little more than a week
Gears Installed!
Wheel cover installed!
One of the old commutator brushes on the left! New one on the right!
PT plate back on!
And here's the finished product!
Bachmann 2-8-2 Running Gear repairs
In September 2012 the SCVR aquired an old Bachmann 2-8-2, within minutes of it running it cracked 2 drive axles. This is the most common problem old Bachmann locomotives had! It is a repair that we at the Seybold Locomotives can handle! We have a few spare drive axles that we keep in the event a customers locomotive needs it or one of Hyde's SCVR locomotives! The entire process was not as simple as taking 2 new axles and installing them, no, it required repairing the rods, gears, wheels, and frame so everything would work properly. It took nearly 2 months but we got the job done! In this job given to us by the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad, we installed 2 new drive axles on the 2nd and 3rd drivers, repaired the split frame connections, repaired the gears, repaired the rods, resealed and realligned all the drive wheels to their proper location and fully cleaned and lubricated it for it's first run! It has been our main focus for the last month and now it's done! We are very pleased with the way it turned out!
Here we are early in the repair process. This is a split frame locomotive with a Pancake motor, after the connections were repaired the motor was tested and it worked good!
The 2 old drive axles removed
2 new drive axles!
Recieving frame work
Assembled for tests!
Undergoing final rod work
Here she is fully reassembled and operational!!
SLW 4-4-2 #6 kit build!
In late 2012 we found and purchased another Roundhouse 4-4-2 kit! We completed it rather quickly and there were no major problems during building ol #6 and now she stands tall and ready to run!
Here's where we started
The parts were quickly moved to our shop and the assembly started fast!
The boiler and tender were quickly painted orange and further assembly followed.
The cylinders were painted and pilot truck installed
Here she is fully complete!
SLW #7 restoration
In early 2013 we were donated an old 1950's Varney 0-4-0T! Needed a ton of frame work!
How she arrived
Steps rebuilt and replaced
Running gear cleaned and repaired and frame repaired. Cleared for paint!
Here she is freshly painted and assembled!
Bachmann 4-4-0 Rebuild!
In winter 2012 the Seybold Locomotive Works was contracted to rebuild a derelict 4-4-0. It was in need of a new cowcatcher, smokestack, tender, and numerous appliances. Also a paint transformation was needed!
